About Rustic Makwa Den

Adventure with us into one of the most unique and biodiverse destinations in North America. The Apostle Islands are a sandstone island archipelago that features long stretches of towering sandstone cliffs nestled amongst pristine beaches. These islands are home to the famous sea caves and are some of the last places to find old-growth boreal forests. The sea caves are found in three spots (Meyer’s Beach, Sand Island, and Devil’s Island) and are sandstone cliffs in which the waves have etched out winding caves that are just the right size for kayaks and paddle boards.

Sea kayak, sit-on-top kayak, and stand up paddle board (SUP) rentals are all available at a competitive rate.

Sea kayak rentals for island crossings require that you can pass a safety test.

Stand up paddle board and sit-on-top kayaks include free safety instruction and do not require a test, you must still know how to swim.

Planning on visiting Bayfield from July 4th – Labor Day? Please book your kayak rentals and Apostle Island sea cave tours in advance. That is our busy season and with prior notice, we can guarantee a reservation for you.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us!

About the Red Cliff Band

The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore isn’t just a popular tourist destination in Wisconsin but also home to the Red Cliff Reservation and the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians. The Reservation is on the Bayfield Peninsula and spans 14 mile long and one mile wide. The Reservation was created by an executive order at an 1856 treaty council for the followers of Chief Buffalo – the “founder” of the Red Cliff Reservation. With more than 7,000 enrolled tribal members, the Reservation upholds and passes down traditions of the Anishinaabe heritage and welcomes visitors with a friendly “boozhoo” (hello in English) to explore this beautiful part of Northern Wisconsin.
